Installing Your Own Closets

Closet organizers are one of the most popular home products today with many people finding that they can organize their personal belongings and reduce clutter with a simple closet system and other types of storage solutions. While you can hire a contractor to create, build and install a closet system for your room, many people are choosing to purchase pre assembled closet organizers from their home improvement stores or furniture stores and installing it themselves. If you are looking to make your living space more organized and structured here are some tips on installing your own closets.

There are two main types of closets in homes these days, they include walk in closets or reach in closets. While a master bedroom may come with a walk in closet, usually most of the other rooms will include reach in closets.

Closet organizers are made for either walk in or reach in closets. You can create a lot of extra free space by installing a closet organizer in either of these types of closets. In order to install a closet organizer, it is extremely important to have the right tools. Usually you will need a quality tape measure to make exact measurements up to 1/8 of an inch, a drill, proper drill bits and anchors, screw drivers, a hammer, a leveler, a stud finder and a small ladder. Usually these jobs take at least two people and a third person can be helpful. It is also important to note that closet organizers can be more than 6 feet in length so make sure you have a big car or pick up truck to take it home.

Once you have bought your closet organizer and removed it from the packaging, read the instructions carefully. While it may look very easy to put together, there may be times that installation must take place a certain way for it all to fit perfectly together. Usually the pieces of the closet organizer are labeled; this makes installation less error prone and easier to find the pieces you need. If the pieces are not labeled, look carefully at each piece and how it is supposed to fit. You can find yourself using the wrong pieces and needing to unassemble and then reassemble an entire area of installation.

If you are planning on installing an entire walk in closet, make sure you have enough time allotted, many reach in closets take a few hours or even an entire 8 hour shift to correctly assemble it, a walk in closet can take one or two days. If these jobs are too complex or time consuming to take on, think about hiring a contractor. It is much better to have it installed correctly then to buy all the materials, drag it home and spend hours upon hours installing it, only to find that the closet organizer was put together incorrectly or with shoddy workmanship. Closet organizers are extremely popular and a great home improvement project for many couples with the basic tools and time commitment necessary.
